Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory that is ideally located at the western end of the Mediterranean, at the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. To the north, Gibraltar and Spain share a land border. Morocco is located on the opposite side of the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the most significant shipping lanes in the world, and is 14 kilometers (9 miles) to the south.

Gibraltar’s parliament is Westminster-style, and Gibraltar is in charge of its own internal affairs while the UK government (represented in Gibraltar by His Excellency, the Governor, Lieutenant General, Sir Ben Bathurst KCVO, CBE) is still in charge of foreign affairs and defense. Every four years, elections are held.
