NIDO WORLD WIDE
The Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) is a global network of Nigerians living abroad. It was founded in 1999 with the aim of promoting the interests of Nigerians in the diaspora and fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and its diaspora communities.
Nigerians IN Diaspora Commission– NIDCOM
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs oversees the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM which ehich was established in compliance with the Act and have the authority and responsibilities granted to it.
Amongst its other duties:
- To Enhance the NIDO’s current administrative structure; collaborate with the NIDO, professional subcommittees, professional group subcommittees, and various sociocultural groups; and create membership participation requirements.
- And to create departments based on what the Board thinks is appropriate.
The Board will decide how NIDO and other departments operate.
NIDCOM chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has been characterized on multiple occasions as a Nigerian Amazon of excellence, A leader who is deserving, kind, equitable, firm, respected, and brave. Affectionately called the “Mother Teresa of the Tube”, she is now known as “Lady Diaspora” for her innovative work elevating Diaspora issues. NIDCOM in Nigeria has been passionately responsible for organizing and providing a structured system of collaborations of Nigerians in the diaspora for their contributions by identifying, preserving, and mobilizing the human capital, material resources, and expertise to the development of Nigeria- NIDO.
NIDO OVERVIEW
NIDO has chapters in various countries around the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, and Australia. These chapters organize events, partner with international bodies to provide support services, and advocate for the rights and interests of Nigerians living abroad.
Recognised by the Federal Government of Nigeria, NIDO has the key objective of having the database of the skills, experience, expertise and knowledge of Nigerians living outside the country. This is one of the Resources aimed at promoting socio-economic and infrastructural development back in Nigeria.
Some of the key objectives of NIDO include:
- Promoting the welfare and well-being of Nigerians in the diaspora
- Fostering unity and solidarity among Nigerians living abroad
- Advocating for the rights and interests of Nigerians in the diaspora
- Encouraging investment in Nigeria by Nigerians in the diaspora
- Strengthening ties between Nigeria and its diaspora communities
NIDO EGYPT Chapter
The majority of the Nigerian community in Egypt in the twenty-first century is composed of students, the majority of whom attend Al-Azhar University in Cairo as well as other public and private Egyptian universities. But since the Egyptian government’s “Study in Egypt” campaign, which aims to draw international students to study at Egyptian universities at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the number of Nigerian students enrolled in other higher education institutions in the nation—especially private ones—has grown. African Export Bank- Afrexim, African Development Bank, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and other regional and international financial institutions employ some Nigerians in the nation. Some collaborate with private companies and Egyptian establishments, while others work with multinational corporations like Shell, LaFarge Cement.
Fortune-seekers who get stuck in Egypt instead of their intended destination—Europe—make up another group of Nigerians living there. These Nigerians frequently become employees one way or another so as to have legal stay and pay for their survival. NIDO has assisted in the organization of the Nigerians in Egypt.
A Pioneer President was chosen for a 4-year term in an election held in 2019 and same was re-elected in 2024 due to his outstanding contributions. NIDO Egypt president, Peter Olufosoye, has served tirelessly in other capacities consistently in Egypt, demonstrating exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to the Nigerian body. This visionary leader’s approach has led to significant improvements and specific achievements, positively impacting the lives of majority of the Nigerian residents. The overwhelming support he received during the reelection campaign is a testament to his popularity and effectiveness. Nigerians are fortunate to have such a dedicated and capable leader at the helm of the affairs.
His unwavering dedication to the Nigerian body is truly inspiring. Under his leadership, Nigerians have witnessed significant improvements in Healthcare, Education and Business Collaborations. His ability to bring people together and foster a sense of unity is unparalleled.
NIDOEG is delighted as a Chapter to be able to focus on several areas such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Professional Networking Teams- PNT, Medical and Health Missions (MHM), Educational support and skills development (ESSD), and Business Ideas Orientation and Promotion (BIOP)
NIDO Egypt has been involved in various initiatives, such as:
- Working with International bodies to provide healthcare services to Nigerian with severe health conditions.
- Organizing cultural events and festivals to promote Nigerian culture.
- Advocating for the rights of Nigerians living in Egypt.
- Supporting Economic development initiatives in Nigeria
