The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is a governmental body established in 2006 by the African Union and UNESCO aimed at promoting the efficient conservation and safeguarding of cultural and natural heritage of Exceptional Universal Significance in Africa. The primary aim of the AWHF is to tackle the difficulties encountered by African States Parties in executing the 1972 World Heritage Convention, particularly the lack of African sites on the World Heritage List and the inadequate conservation and management of these locations.

In 2010, the Fund was recognized as a Category II Centre by UNESCO, thus establishing itself as an official and esteemed partner of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and the World Heritage Committee’s Advisory Bodies (ICOMOS, ICCROM, and IUCN). The Fund is administered by the Government of the Republic of South Africa for the benefit of the African continent.

The AWHF nurtures a strong partnership with the African Union, promoting important synergies between UNESCO’s Priority Africa and the Agenda 2063 of the African Union.

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is seeking applications for its 2025 Internship Programme, aimed at young professionals committed to the conservation of cultural and natural heritage. Founded in 2006 via a collaboration between UNESCO and the African Union, the AWHF aims to tackle issues that African nations encounter in executing the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

The AWHF Fund aims to boost the presence of African locations on the World Heritage List and improve their sustainable preservation.

The Mission Of The African World Heritage Fund- AWHF is to:

Offer assistance in recognizing and compiling African heritage sites on the World Heritage List;

Offer help and aid for the preservation and oversight of heritage sites in Africa, especially those that are already listed on the World Heritage List;

Restore locations listed on the World Heritage in Danger.

Educate heritage specialists and site administrators for continuous skill enhancement;

Engage communities in decisions about their heritage while guaranteeing that they receive tangible benefits from it.

To achieve this Mission, AWHF is dedicated to enhancing capacity. The capacity building initiatives emphasize education regarding the World Heritage nomination procedure as well as conservation and site management. The Fund is available to all African nations that are Member States of the World Heritage Convention.

This virtual internship from AWHF is available to people from Africa and the Africans in Diaspora. It lasts for six months and offers a stipend. The role focuses on communication and collaboration, offering a creative environment to refine abilities in social media, content creation, and outreach, while aiding in safeguarding and honoring Africa’s rich heritage.
