Although foreign tourists are officially welcome in Turkmenistan, many foreign visitors are deterred from travelling due to the country’s costly guided tour requirements and onerous visa application process.

The most challenging portion of the journey is entering Turkmenistan. Tickets can only be bought through an agency as there are currently no internet booking options for flights operated by the national airline.

The sole port of entry for foreign arrivals and departures is Ashgabat City, so you can only fly into it. Only Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa offer international flights into Turkmenistan, making it one of the country’s most remote international destinations.

Nevertheless, international flights are available from the local Turkmenistan Airlines to Beijing, Paris, New Delhi, London, Birmingham, Dubai, Bangkok, Amritsar, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Jeddah, and Minsk.
